The Future is Human - with Kayleigh O'Keefe

Mar 14, 2023

Nostalgia is a very relatable human feeling, but what does it teach us? While preparing for a flight to Los Angeles, California, to meet with the co-authors of The Great Leadership Awakening, Kayleigh was hit by a wave of nostalgia. In this episode, Kayleigh discusses the concept of nostalgia and explores the deeper meanings the feeling may be trying to convey.

Kayleigh’s nostalgia was sparked by riding her bike to the beach and jumping into the ocean, recording out of her small bedroom studio, and flying to California. When she analyzed why these activities were causing nostalgia, she realized that they were all reminders of times where she got to enjoy nature, explore the world, connect with other people, and be at the start of something new. Her bedroom studio reminded her of the early days of Soul Excellence, learning and creating a publishing company from that exact spot. Biking to the ocean reminded her of early days after first moving to Florida in 2020, exploring nature and fostering her creativity while everything shut down around her. Flying to California brought up nostalgia for her very first time flying to San Francisco and Hawaii and getting to experience new worlds.

For Kayleigh, these moments of nostalgia showed her facts about herself that she has always known to be true, but that she may have forgotten to incorporate into her present life. They also provided an opportunity to look back in sentimentality and pride for all she has accomplished. Nostalgia can be many things because it teaches us about our inner desires and provides chances to make new meanings from past experiences.

Quotes

  • “I have so much nostalgia for those early days where I got to bike and be, and feel, and connect. It's almost like I created the conditions for myself to have a lot more aha moments than I find myself having at this moment.” (12:44-13:02)

  • “It wasn't just ideas and spaciousness and beach. It was learning how to build a business, to ask for money, to come up with ideas, to learn how to build a publishing company. And it all happened right here in this exact spot.” (17:29-17:43)

  • “When you think about your own moments of nostalgia, is there something that you're emotionally taking away that's maybe missing from your experience in this moment? And can you somehow cultivate that?” (18:32-18:43)

  • “Don't forget how far you've come because it's so easy to forget how far we've come, especially when things feel extremely difficult and overwhelming.” (18:53-19:02)

  • “Nostalgia is so powerful. I think it tells us a lot about our desires, about our inner landscape, about the things that make us tick.” (27:52-28:03)
