The Future is Human - with Kayleigh O'Keefe

Jan 17, 2023

A lot of life lessons can be learned from watching and being on a journey with individuals who are looking for love. The desire for connection and intimacy are vital components of the human experience. Today, Kayleigh talks about the lessons she learned from watching Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum, a reality show about a group of neurodiverse people looking for love, going on dates, and entering into relationships. Even if you are not neurodivergent, Kayleigh has many takeaways from the show that can benefit you and help you to go deeper into your own humanity.

Kayleigh observed many lessons on life and love while watching Love on the Spectrum. The first was the mutuality of asking for permission, even for small things like holding hands. Next, she observed a greater appreciation for the little things along the journey of life. This tied in slightly with the next lesson which was to recognize how special our interests are and to be supportive of our loved ones’ passions even if they do not directly interest us. The next lesson is the permission to self soothe, a thing that is often judged quite harshly by society but that harms no one and can help us to regulate our emotions and keep our anxiety in check. Kayleigh found that the neurodiverse individuals on the show were also very vocal and honest about their feelings toward other people, even during hard times like breakups.

Love on the Spectrum provides a great opportunity to see people approaching something as human and relatable as dating from a different and unique perspective. By learning more about neurodivergent individuals, you may also learn more about how to better connect with your own humanity and the people around you. Tune into The Future is Human with host Kayleigh O’Keefe to learn all seven of the lessons she observed while watching the show and how you can apply these lessons to your own life.

Quotes

• “There's so much to be learned by watching and listening and being on the journey with these individuals who are looking for love, because whether you're in a relationship, you're not in a relationship, you're married, you're not married, whatever you even want in the world, all of us as part of the human experience desire love, desire connection.” (9:13-9:33 | Kayleigh)

• “One of the things that almost every single person on the show did was ask for permission.” (11:09-11:15 | Kayleigh)

• “Our interests are so special. They're so unique. They're what makes us us.” (15:46-15:52 | Kayleigh)

• “Self soothing is okay, and it's something that we're not given permission to, and it's something probably a version of me in the past would really judge.” (19:16-19:27 | Kayleigh)

• “It’s free to tell someone how we feel, the impact they're having on us, what we notice in them, that warm feeling, whatever the feeling is. This is free human intimacy that we can offer to anyone in our lives right now.” (24:44-25:01 | Kayleigh)

• “How many times are we sort of, not even in relationships, maybe it's in business, maybe it's things that we're tolerating in our life that we're circumventing around and not just being straightforward and honest about how we feel?” (32:00-32:16 | Kayleigh)

• “I was able to not only see people differently, see a population in the world differently, but I was able to see myself differently, and I was able to go deeper into my own humanity.” (34:47-34:59 | Kayleigh)
